How To

This winter, dress your your home in layers of feel-good, touchy-feely luxury.

While summer calls for clean clutter-free spaces, winter homes need to ward of Jack Frost and boost your mood. “During the colder months, every winter home needs layers of texture, colour and lighting,” suggests Megan Morgan, furniture buyer at Coricraft.

Layering is all about ensuring that each element in a room holds its own, yet still makes an overall style statement. “To pull a layered look together like a pro, everything in the room should work together to create a sense of continuity,” explains Elmari Myburgh of Incanda Furniture.

Layer by layer

“Create plenty of contrast and play around with different textures,” says Myburgh. To add depth and dimension, mix raw wooden furniture, tactile accessories and woven rugs.

Colour can inject life into your wintertime abode. According to Morgan, “A rich palette instantly warms up a room.” As counterpoint, a mix of neutral tones and touchy-feely textures provide a calming respite on days when you just want to curl up under a warm blanket.

“A statement lamp can add a sense cosiness to any space and brighten up dark corners,” says Morgan. Scented candles are another effortless way to give your home a warm glow. And the soft aroma of sandalwood or bergamot will give an added sensory dimension.

Back to basics

“While colour, texture and contrast are certainly important, it only works if you include a few common elements to anchor the room,” says Myburgh. Morgan suggests sticking to neutrals for large furniture pieces like sofas and coffee tables. “Then add interest and warmth through textured accessories,” she says.

Trend alert

According to Morgan, textures are huge this winter. Expect velvets, knits and weaves, raw wooden pieces, as well as the ever-popular metallic – especially brass.

This winter, rich jewel tones like deep blues and emerald greens, terracotta, burnt orange and burgundy will raise the barometer. “Monochrome is also still on-trend, as are botanical prints,” says Morgan.

Quick and easy tips to warm your home, room by room:

The easiest way is to update your accessories. Replace bright, summery scatters with something that oozes warmth like a deep-red velvet cushions paired with a knitted throw.

Tactile throws are the mainstay of winter cocooning. Natural fabrics have a great snuggle factor, as they are synonymous with warmth and security. Simply drape a few over the armrest or along the back of a couch.

Layer throws at the end of your bed. When using more than one, always pair a plain and patterned design.

Rugs are perfect for fending off the cold and keeping your feet warm during winter. A large area rug in your lounge, dining room and bedroom will add warmth throughout your home. Curtains provide better insulation than blinds.
