The country-chic kitchen

Written by Janine Jorgensen

Whether it’s French Provencal or English farmhouse, the country-style kitchen has an enduring appeal thanks to its welcoming feel and elegant finishes. Bring it up to date with these tips:

Keep the colour palette simple

Choose white, duck egg blue and grey for a simple, modern look that combines well with other finishes, from wood to chrome.

Forgo the detail

Traditionally, country-style kitchens have a lot of detail in their cabinetry, soft furnishings and accessories. The new-look kitchen is much more streamlined, with handle-free, plain cabinetry, neutral blinds, crafted wooden chairs and items placed in display cabinets.

Have a gathering space

At the heart of this style of kitchen is a space for sitting down to meals with family and friends. Incorporate an island or a large wooden table to create a convivial atmosphere for cooking and entertaining.

Add modern, functional lighting

Illuminate task areas with under-cabinet LED lighting and swap outdated ceiling fixtures over the dining space either with pendants or a modern chandelier for a warm ambience.

Think about appliances

Ensure the appliances either match the style of the kitchen or can be concealed to keep the space clutter free. For example, a coloured range cooker is in keeping with the country look and can add visual impact to a neutral space, as well as gas stove being a more practical consideration for a power-strained climate.
