Country manor

By Rami Moorosi, Project Consultant Sharon Richards, Photography Karl Rogers

When the owners of this modern farm-style property were planning their ideal home, they were looking for an informal, relaxed, family home that was unique to them. The exteriors of the structure use angular lines accentuated by features such as patios, which allow for both indoor and outdoor living. A fireplace has been adorned with hand-chipped natural stone from Phalaborwa, and wall cladding has been used creatively on both in interior and exterior to accentuate the rustic theme.

The decor of the home is simple, but with precise attention to detail. Inspired by the surrounds, which are suburban but with a country feel, the interiors are elegant, yet warm and inviting – making one feel like lord of the manor. The colour palette comprises predominately neutral colours and textures, juxtaposed with elements of the unexpected. This was achieved through splashes of bold colour in certain areas, in painted walls and fabric choices. A good example of this concept is seen in the passage, where natural, textured walls are accented with sophisticated framed mirrors on one side and large paintings of bolder colour on the other.

As in the rest of the living areas, here the colour is injected through soft furnishings such as cushions. The bedrooms feature a stronger accent of colour – a good reflection of the very lively character of the owner and his family. No truly South African home is complete without an entertainment area that caters for all needs, with stack doors that open up from the living areas to a fully furnished patio, complete with a large braai facility.

The area looks out over a manicured lawn that the gracefully frames the swimming pool. The same attention to detail was paid to the landscaping of the garden, which was focused on complementing the architecture of the home. This was achieved through the use of symmetry, leaf texture and contrasting plants, as well as hardscaping elements to create dynamic focal points.
