How To

Cover it up!

With so many options out there, you are certainly spoilt for choice when it comes to window coverings. Here’s a range of ideas and popular trends to consider…

Keep it neutral – Neutral tones are very in right now in terms of interiors and nothing looks more elegant than a floor-to-ceiling curtain in a calming hue (think earthy tones, ivory and beige), especially in open-plan living spaces.

Keep it simple – Don’t go all ruffles and frills with your curtaining. Rather keep things sleek and simple. Think heavy luxurious drops or breezy sheer panels devoid of tassels and elaborate trims. Having said that though, geometric shapes and repeated ‘micro’ patterns remain popular features on drapery fabrics.

Opt for au naturel – Try incorporating the latest sustainable and eco-friendly window treatments in your home, from bamboo and woven blinds to sustainable wood shutters. These make for a great backdrop against neutral curtains or use them on their own for more of a minimalist look. You can also bring the outdoors in (along with your many houseplants), by introducing a window blind in a fresh, revitalizing and uplifting green hue. Botanicals remain very popular, especially vibrant ‘big bloom’ designs and motifs on curtains and furnishings.

Be-jewelled – If neutrals aren’t your thing, bring in some ‘now’ colour in the form of rich jewel-toned curtains and/or blinds in turquoise, emerald, amber, amethyst, ruby and topaz. Set them against a mix of metals in the form of hooks and curtain rods, shiny accessories and shimmering wallpaper to set an opulent scene. Instead of heavy curtains, consider a sheer fabric with a metallic thread woven into it for a light-filtering choice. Or opt for a digitally-printed blind with a foil effect for added bling.

Go lush – Silks, velvets and suede remain ever-popular due to their tactile appeal. Plus they drape beautifully and add instant glamour to a room. And because they’re so lush on their own, they don’t need any dressing up.

Film it – Decorative window film offers a great middle ground between maintaining privacy and letting in natural light. You can buy them in clear or coloured varieties, in a range of patterns and effects (from delicate florals to modern geometrics). Most are sold in rolls or sheets that you can cut to fit individual windows or glass doors.

Shutter it – Especially popular in bedrooms, a solid shutter can help aid sleep by blocking out light completely. Shutters also have a classic, regal feel about them. And from an energy-saving perspective, they can help to insulate a space during the cooler months.

Layer it – Pick a colour and layer a mix of curtains in various shades of that colour, from dark to light, hanging side by side. Start with the darker shade on the outside and work your way in. This is a great look for kids’ bedrooms – think layers of pink in a little girl’s room or from black-to-grey in a teenage boy’s room. Layering can also imply combining curtains with blinds for added privacy and effect.

Smart shades – Take your window treatments to a whole new level by motorizing them. You can schedule your shades to go up and down or your curtains to open or close at the simple push of a button; at some expense of course.
