Dalliance House

How much can nostalgia play a part in a renovation process? For some, this is solely the reason for the impulse buy of a dilapidated house, choosing to ignore the hard work that lies beneath this emotional reaction. To me this is a very ‘human’ response to our fascination with the past. This also appears to be the case with Dalliance House.

This beautiful neoclassical house resides in Kafisia, a place where wealthy Athenians would once flock, in search of relief from the Athens heat. Dalliance House, as it is so aptly named, was the place to be. Held within it’s walls are memories of blossoming love and wooing of the fairer sex; when relationships began with long distant love letters and holding hands in public was frowned upon. As the years went by, the use of the house changed back and forth from commercial to residential, resulting in many adaptations and alterations.

Wanting to preserve every memory within Dalliance House, three architects joined forces to transform this beautiful place back to its original purpose as a place to meet. Panagiotis Fountas of Nine Design, Konstantina Panagiotou of INK Architecture and Marilena Spanoudaki-Bakopouluo have carefully preserved not only the original neoclassical details, but also the changes to the house over time reflecting the honesty of what Dalliance has experienced over the years.

The result? An assault on the senses (in a good way!), with such differing styles sitting side by side, Dalliance House is once again the place to be. Totally original, beautifully crafted and light at heart. For the heart is where it all began…..
