Eating together is an integral part of home life – whether it is eating your daily meals with your partner and kids, catching up over a Sunday lunch with your extended family, or entertaining friends to a sumptuous dinner; a well-designed dining area can make it happen.

Anton Odendaal from Rochester Furniture offers some design advice for those looking to spruce up their dining areas:

Then first thing that should be considered when choosing furniture for your dining area is selecting a style. Anton explains: “The style of furniture you choose should complement both the architecture and decor of the home in which it is to be featured. The furniture and colour schemes you choose throughout your home should harmonise with one another, to create a seamless flow between the different rooms and areas. It is no good, for example, to choose a really contemporary dining suite, when your lounge suite is very traditional.”

Anton says that is important that the furniture fits in the specified space: “The furniture must be in proportion to the space in which it will be featured – for example, if you need to furnish a really big dining room, then you will need a similarly big and lavish dining suite. However, a large dining table positioned in a small dining area can overwhelm and dwarf the space.”

He offers the following tip on how to establish whether a dining suite is suitable for a particular space: “An outline can help you determine whether a suite is suitable for a particular space – simply measure the table, and then transfer the measurements onto the floor by laying down masking tape to help you visualise whether the table will fit in the space or not. Once the table has been measured out and marked on the floor, add in the measurements of each chair with masking tape. Then measure to see if there is enough space left behind the chairs to allow for them to be pulled out from under the table – approximately 60cm is usually enough.
