Diarise The Turbine Art Fair ‘14

Buying art can be an intimidating experience; even though there are no entrance fees, galleries are not the most welcoming of places. The viewing areas are quiet, cold and clinical, the artworks have no visible price tags, and it’s often hard to distinguish a Renoir from a Rembrandt, let alone being able to decide on which piece is worth spending a small fortune on.

The Turbine Art Fair (TAF) wants to change this perception. Launched last year, this annual fair is aimed at making viewing, buying and collecting South African art easy and fun.

“The fair is the perfect platform for those wanting to start collecting South African art in a unique and buyer-friendly way, bringing the best galleries and artists under one roof. The whole experience offers something for everyone – a showcase of contemporary art and artists, artisan food, architecture and Johannesburg culture” says Glynis Hyslop, managing director of The Forum Company, the main sponsor and organiser of TAF14 (Turbine Art Fair 2014).

Running from 17 to 20 July at the Turbine Hall, a multifunctional venue in the heart of the Newtown Precinct, the venues unique history and position within Newtown and Johannesburg provides TAF14’s central theme – “Emerge”.

According to the official press release “The constantly changing area from market to slum to economic center to creative hub, all representative of broader Johannesburg, should provide gallery exhibitors with motivation for their curated spaces”.

What makes this fair exciting is that all the artworks (by established and emerging artists) will be priced below R30 000. And as part of the fair, there will be a jazz festival produced in partnership with Basseline as well as art walkabouts by Robyn Penn and a children’s art area sponsored by Staedtler.

  • TAF14 will be running from the 17th -20th July 2014. General admission tickets can be bought from www.quicket.co.za for R55 per person or at the door for R75 per person. For more info visit www.turbineartfair.co.za.
