Bathrooms

Eastern inspiration

“Bathrooms can so easily become boring and mundane, rather than being a reflection of your personal style. By introducing a contemporary Eastern feel into your bathroom, you can create a space that is not only serene and calming, but one that is also on point regarding high-end décor trends – turning your bathroom into a chic, minimalistic spa-like retreat. Renowned for its simplicity, the Eastern influence is perfect for someone who loves tranquil spaces,” says Jasmin Kraneveldt from leading tile and sanitaryware supplier, Bathroom Bizarre.

Eastern embellishments

Eastern-inspired décor incorporates a plethora of various organic textures and tones, and in so doing, it brings the outdoors in – creating spaces that are reminiscent of nature. For example, in the attached bathroom space, neutral Travertino Gris tiles from Bathroom Bizarre have been used throughout. They offer a cool aesthetic, while also creating visual interest by their natural stone-like texture.

For added textural and visual interest, these tiles have been paired with a splashback made from mosaic tiles comprising various materials of natural stone and silver. Says Jasmin: “This splashback is not only functional, but it also forms an eye-catching feature. The combination of glimmering silver mosaic tiles, featured alongside other neutral colours, such as greys, creams and taupe, summarises the colour scheme of the entire room. The same mosaic tiles have been used to create a vertical listello running through the shower space – creating a sense of continuity throughout.”

Clean lines

Any design with Eastern characteristics requires unfussy, minimal form, with clean lines and nature-inspired shapes. This bathroom for example, boasts simple and sophisticated fittings, such as the Galatina tall basin mixers, whose geometric lines mirror those of other features in the room. Says Jasmin: “The taps also serve to accentuate the flowing lines of the Amalfi free-standing  basins by creating contrast between the angular taps and the basins’ organic curves. The end result is a stylish and up-to-date vanity area that offers a clean and simplistic aesthetic.”

Back to basics

Natural flavours are an integral part of the Oriental design ethos, explains Jasmin: “The richly coloured wood, along with its attractive wood grain texture, featured in the the Panama 1200 floating vanity and mirror set is a prime example. It serves to add to the natural and calming atmosphere of the bathroom space by incorporating added visual interest and organic appeal. The vanity not only houses the basins, but also contains two large draws which are perfect for minimising keeping clutter and maintaining a minimalist and feng shui-inspired ambience. The large horizontal mirror fits perfectly into the space with its clean lines and wide rectangular frame – it echoes the same palette and texture featured in the vanity below, which ties the two pieces together in a seamless and balanced manner.”

Zen sophistication

Of course, Eastern design is not just about creating beautifully minimalist spaces – it is also about incorporating a little Eastern culture and spirituality into the space in question. In the featured bathroom for exmaple, the glass shower screen has been printed with an iconic Buddha design. This attractive shower screen doubles as both a splash screen and a piece of art. The beautiful imagery on the shower screen creates a focal point and ultimately sets the tone for the whole room.

Says Jasmin: “The printed shower screen is a great way of incporporating art into the bathroom design. Since the shower screen doubles as both a practical and a design element – allowing for the other elements in the bathroom to remain simple and unassuming. It is also a great way of adding interest to smaller bathrooms, as it doesn’t require much space.”

The Portofino exposed shower mixer has clean and geometrically modern lines, and it creates a sophisticated look in the shower area. Boasting a separate shower head and hand-shower, it allows for the ultimate in luxrious showering experiences. Enhancing the overall minimalistic composition, the Expand-A-Drain tactfully provides discreet drainage in the shower.

Let there be light

For a successful Eastern design, a composition needs to boast a substantial amount of both natural and artificial light. Three glass Bell Jar pendant lights in a metallic smokey finish, available from The Lighting Warehouse, are an elegant design feature. They also serve to provide some much-need task lighting above the vanity. For added illuination, outdoor path lights that are flush with the floor, have been included in the shower cubicle. Since they are outdoor fittings, these path lights can withstand the wet conditions prevalent in the bathroom in general, and in particular, in the shower enclosure.
