It goes without saying that space and storage are integral aspects of a functional kitchen. Fortunately for home owners, kitchen manufactures and designers are constantly innovating new products that make the most of our kitchens. Some of these innovations come in the form of drawer runners, hinges, storage and pantry pullout solutions.

A common problem that most home owners find is that conventional cabinets generally provide only two or three shelves at a few predefined heights. The storage space that these cabinets offer is rarely enough. One way to make the most of this space is through the use of a product such as MultiMatic from SieMatic. This flexible utility system can be individually adjusted, changed and expanded any time, and without any professional help. It provides for an individual configuration of the interior cabinet space and a user-friendly order of utensils. The result is up to 30% more storage space per cabinet.

Another space solution is the Pantry Pullout solution from Grass that offers up to 200kg of weight capacity storage, which means you can have all your products in one cupboard. The drawer runners have a maximum weight capacity of 80kg, which means you can have drawers that are 1 200mm wide with pots and crockery packed inside, using optimum space. Chantell Koen of Inside Living also adds: “Maximising kitchen storage space is really quite dependent on the design of the kitchen. Certainly the mechanisms used in corner units are particularly useful in these areas which would otherwise be quite inaccessible.”

Blum has also developed the Tandembox Intivo drawer system that offers several solutions for wasted space. Sink drawers fit around the sink and provide new and normally unused storage space; pullouts with high sides mean that you can fill up larger drawers with more provisions, and the Orga-Line dividing system keeps all your items organised within the drawer.

“Due to the society we live in, a functional space is not only desired but demanded in order to ensure a space that is calm, workable and efficient. We are therefore seeing an increase in demand for our product as each cabinet is internally organised with inserts, dividers and thought-through practical elements that assure our clients that functionality comes standard,” says Philip Richards of blu_line.

Keeping in line with green living trends, recycling bins are a must-have item in the kitchen these days, with recycling becoming the everyday norm.
