When most people think of their dream family home, they have visions of a grand, double-storey property. But the owners of this home were more drawn to the idea of building a modern, luxurious, one-storey structure, although this proved to be a bit of a challenge during the planning process.

“All of the surrounding houses are double-storey. The challenge that we had was to design a north-facing house in such a way that we could create enough privacy while entertaining, taking into account that we have 12 neighbours,” explains the owner. “In the end, due to the slope of the stand, the architect had to incorporate a few steps.”

With a contemporary architectural style, elegant decor and luxurious modern amenities, this home was designed for easy indoor and outdoor entertaining.

The owner says: “We were looking to build a house that suits our relaxed lockup-and-go lifestyle. It had to be modern and the entertainment had to be centred around the pool. As a result, the main bedroom and study walk out onto the swimming pool, and the dining room, kitchen and lounge areas all open up onto the covered patio and heated swimming pool by means of stackable sliding doors.”

With ample space and a light and airy, open-plan layout, the house consists of three en-suite bedrooms, a study, dining room, lounge, enclosed spa room, three garages, a granny flat, and a kitchen with walk-in pantry and scullery.

The owners opted for a kitchen countertop that was designed to double up as a bar, and allow guests to sit and interact with them while they prepare meals. The kitchen also has stackable sliding doors that open up to both sides of the space, further creating a seamless indoor-outdoor transition.

In terms of aesthetics, the owner consulted interior designer Michael Prinsloo of Michael Prinsloo Designs. His brief was to create an earthy interior that makes use of natural colours, while being energetic. After spending some time with the owners, frequenting fabrics shops, designer furniture stores, looking at paintings and rugs, he developed a great understanding of their taste. “Thereafter we gave him carte blanche to continue decorating the entire house, and we are elated with the outcome. The modern interior complements the modern exterior beautifully.”
