An eye for beauty

The Eye of Africa Golf & Residential Estate, in the south of Johannesburg, is a couple of kilometres away from the busy city centre, but within it lies a place where peace and calm can be found the minute you walk through the glass front door of this bold, geometric-shaped house.

“We love the tranquil environment and lifestyle offered by Eye of Africa. Our architect managed to design a beautiful home that reflected exactly what we wanted, and is also comfortable and inviting,” say the home owners.

The first thing that greets you when you step into the expansive foyer is a striking staircase, flanked by striped and flowered wallpapered walls, and accentuated by a dramatic hanging chandelier.

You may be tempted to stay right there and admire the beauty, but then you would be missing out on exploring the rest of this striking home.

Minimally decorated in natural tones and accents of colour throughout, it allows attention to be drawn to the design features of the home, especially the grey and white high-gloss kitchen with a bold island that houses a chic gas stove and a discreet drop sink.

Entertaining friends and family is a big part of this family’s lifestyle, and the classically styled home cinema, designed and installed by HFX Systems, seats nine in its ruby-red reclining seats. Featuring old-fashioned movie posters on the walls, it is the perfect room for bringing everyone together. “The decor brings the iconic 1970s Radio City Music Hall in New York to life. The dark colours in a matt finish minimise the reflection of light from the screen, and the carpentry ensures there is no unwanted resonance when the audio system is played back,” says Jacques Kruger of HFX Systems.

Also perfect for entertaining, the indoor braai area includes a state-of-the-art stainless steel built-in braai and whitewashed dining set with trendy benches for seating. This area opens up to the outdoors through glass folding doors.

This home may be one of many on this sought-after golf estate, but through the skill and vision of the architect, and the desire of the home owners to create a welcoming space, this house, quite simply, stands out from the rest.
