With sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean, this chic apartment, in an affluent residential area of Cape Town, is home to a couple who enjoy spending their holidays near the sea.

The beach apartment was completely redesigned and renovated. Part of this process involved demolishing some interior walls, and building new structures and columns.

The apartment consists of three bedrooms, all en suite, an open living area, kitchen, scullery/laundry and a guest toilet decorated with unique cladded marble. With a monotone palette lending a sophisticated flair to the living area, the bespoke white linen sofa and solid black-stained oak dining table are in appealing contrast to the subdued hues of the interior.

The dining room is skilfully designed with low-base furniture and a pop-up TV, to facilitate an unobstructed view of the sea. Movable coffee units of dissimilar textures provide an interesting alternative to the norm, as velvet armchairs, sheer polyester curtains and a 100%-silk hand-loomed rug bring warmth and elegance to the living area. Floating shelves with decorative accessories and boxed downlighters enhance the contemporary feel of the space.

The design of the kitchen is of the highest specification, incorporating custom-made satin-finish doors and cupboards. A minimalist approach requires accessories and appliances to be stored behind doors. White leather bar stools add a refreshing touch, and the wide array of shelves provides greater depth and a sense of space.

The main bedroom has an open, uncluttered appeal, with velvet-clad headboards and a mock guinea fowl throw adding to the contemporary mood of the room. A door leading to the terrace, with ample adjoining windows, lends itself to an exquisite view, and maintains a feeling of spaciousness.

The bathroom is in keeping with the monotone palette, echoing the seaside aesthetic. A freestanding bath, rain shower and heated towel rails are an extension of the comfort and indulgence of the bedroom.

Two stand-out features of the apartment are the decorative rain mirror in the dining area and the back-lit marble wall in the entrance hall, enhancing the feeling of luxury. Skylights are a prominent feature, giving off ample natural light and bathing the apartment, which has engineered oak flooring, in a warm and homely ambience.

The owners favour the “sunroom”, where they like to spend time reading, while enjoying the view. Block-out blinds ensure that the room receives adequate protection from the sun, when needed. Aluminium stack back doors lead out onto a sunny terrace that boasts a private plunge pool enclosed in a frameless glass balustrade.

This modern beach apartment is perfect for bringing the family together over the holidays. “We enjoy big family dinners and walks on the beach with our grandchildren,” the home owner says.
