When these home owners realised they needed a bigger place for their growing family, the hunt for the right piece of land began. A suitable estate was found in Johannesburg’s northern suburbs, and an idea from a family holiday in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands set the ball rolling.

After spending a holiday at Gowrie Farm, the home owners were inspired to build their house in a similar style. Their active involvement in the drawing up of the house plans resulted in the country farm-style house they now call home.

This is the perfect starter home for this small, but growing, family. The open-plan setup is an ideal way for the family to stay connected to one another. “I grew up in a close family, so it was important for me to have a home that makes me feel connected to everyone in the house. All of the rooms are close to each other. If my son is in the library upstairs, I can see him, even though I may be in kitchen,” the home owner explains.

The decor was coordinated by the home owners themselves; they created a strong, classic farm look with timeless furniture pieces. And in keeping with the idea of having a connected house, the pool was positioned in the middle of the courtyard, acting as both a pool and a water feature, and easily accessible from a number of rooms in the house.
