Hammocks from Fabric House

I went to the launch of the new Zara clothing store in Sandton last week, and I was amazed at how closely fashion trends and interior trends align.

For instance, one of the buzz words is metallics (as our interiors contributor, Susan Hughes, discussed 2 issues back). From full length dresses and feature walls, to clever ways of using metallics like a belt or button,  cushion or thread through the curtains.

Bright and bold are confidently here, in blends of primary colours and mixed swatches. Great for a South African summer and especially your outdoor entertainment areas. If you follow me on Twitter you would have seen the most gorgeous hammocks I discovered for chilling in colourful comfort outside.

Then we have the soft textures. Heavenly fabrics too delicious on the skin are great for linens and bathroom towels and body cloths. Soft and feminine in the ladies’ range with pastels, neutrals and dusks are magnificent in a guest suite; and smart masculine lines with perfect cuts, collars and cuffs in the mens’ range are the makings of an executive study and home office.

Accessories are always the master designer’s secret tools of the trade. The right accessories, from a tailored pair of shoes to a gold-brushed handbag, can turn a plain outfit into something to behold. Likewise, a painting or set of prints, designer artefact, gold-brushed throw or boldly coloured cushions, can bring sunlight into a dark room.

I have a newfound appreciation of fashion trends, which influence and are influenced by interior trends. I will make sure to keep on visiting those clothing stores – to keep up with the trends of course…
