Feel your kitchen

Design Quarter

I visited the Design Quarter in Fourways over the weekend, to look at some kitchen showrooms. It makes a tremendous difference seeing the products in person as opposed to on the pages of a magazine (even one as fantastic as SA Home Owner!) This is one of the biggest pieces of advice I would give a home owner seeking inspiration to renovate or build a kitchen: visit the showrooms, chat to the professionals, look at and touch the products. You need to “feel” that they will fit into your space at home, and whether the style will complement the theme/s you have chosen for your home.

In my case, the products and materials I found were far too modern and clinical for what I have in mind. Straight lines, muted colours, spacey designs – brilliant for a more modern home, but I am a classicist at heart, with a marriage of country and contemporary speaking volumes to me: wood, curves, that “country-style” charm, but with all the trappings of modern finishes – taps, basins, lighting, cabinetry.
