The future of fridges

Written by Tiana Cline

What do you want from your fridge? More space? Smarter shelving? Better temperature control? Perhaps a built-in ice maker? What if we told you that the fridges of the future are so powerful you can connect them to an app to see what’s happening inside? When it comes to keeping your produce fresh, fridge manufacturers are taking it one step further. Thanks to additions like cameras and sensors, there’s a whole lot more that today’s technology-advanced cooler boxes can get up to.

Who needs cookbooks when you have the internet, YouTube and apps from the best chefs around the world? But what if you didn’t have to expose your phone or tablet to the perils of cooking? Ocado has a fridge with not one, but two touch displays. So while getting dinner ready, you can stream cooking shows, creates shopping lists and even weighs food.

Samsung’s Family Hub™ Refrigerator is brilliant if you never remember what to add to your shopping list. Cameras inside of the fridge can take photos of the inside of your fridge at the touch of the button – you can even adjust the inside temperature from your phone using WiFi. The outside of the fridge includes a 21.5-inch screen that you can use to order groceries but also play music, if you’re connected to a streaming service.

And then there’s LG’s Smart InstaView™ Door-In-Door® Refrigerator which can detect movement and open the door when you walk up to it! But that’s far from its best feature, using Windows 10 and an exclusive app, you can create digital labels to certain items to make sure food doesn’t go off.

Forgot to add something to the shopping list? All Liebherr appliances labelled “SmartDevice” can be networked to the SmartDeviceBox, a Microsoft-designed accessory learns the products inside your fridge, and then lets you know (sophisticated image recognition technology) when you’re running low. And then a list is sent to your smartphone.
