Get the look: Shabby Chic

Written by Shereen Lurie

If you’re a fan of pared-down and unpretentious luxury, the shabby chic look is for you. This popular decor style is comfortable and eclectic, layering old and new to create wonderfully cosy and inviting spaces. It’s trademark lies in its ability to combine distressed heritage pieces with ultra modern elements. Here’s how to get the look…

Paint the walls white

Start off by painting your walls white to create a bright, neutral space. This will be the perfect backdrop to display an eclectic mix of furniture, fabrics and objets d’art.

Invest in a chandelier

A chandelier may be a costly piece but it will help to inject glamour into an otherwise understated space. It will serve as a great juxtaposition against the more rustic pieces.

Reclaimed wooden shelves look great in the kitchen, especially when they are used to display a collection of beautiful glass jars, plates, wooden bowls and small retro appliances. Use wrought iron wall brackets to prop up the shelves.

Layer your linen

Create a luxurious look in the bedroom by featuring a collection of scatter cushions, throws and a must-have quilt. Use a variety of soft and romantic prints and colours, but throw in a pop of colour for added interest. If you prefer a classic look, use white on white linen.

Texturise

Create the signature shabby chic look by combining a variety of texturised visual tones. Tonal colour variations and multiple textures will add interest and depth.

Upcycle

Shabby chic is all about making the most out of what you already have, so reupholster your old sofa, whitewash your dining room table and repurpose a host of other household items to turn old forgotten pieces into treasured family heirlooms.

Cluster antique frames

A grouping of antique frames will create a unique focal point in any room. Browse local flea markets and second-hand shops for used frames and then give them a shabby chic makeover by sanding them down and painting them in a variety of sorbet colours.

Mismatch

Forget about sets – mismatched dining room chairs add a quirky and fun element in any dining room. Stick with neutral tones if you’d like a more understated look. Remember to stay with one common element (colour, design, style or material) to unify the chairs.
