Harmony in home

By Trisha Harinath

Feng Shui, an ancient Chinese art, is one of the most common disciplines that can help you achieve a serene atmosphere in the home. In essence Feng Shui (which, when translated, means wind and water respectively) is a practice that enables you to take beneficial and effective actions in your home so that your house can have an optimal flow of energy (chi/qi).

Feng Shui essentials

There are a few important factors that need to be considered when trying to improve the energy flow in a home. One of the most imperative of these is that there should be a good balance between quiet (yin) and active (yang) spaces in the home. To obtain spaces that are true to the Feng Shui nature, home owners need to ensure that yang spaces such as the main entrance, reception hall and entertainment areas are positioned in such a way that they receive enough sunlight.

Colours that can be used in these areas should be bright. When it comes to yin areas, rooms or areas in the home that are generally quiet and relaxed, such as the bedrooms where yin chi (energy) is needed, should be located in serene and tranquil areas of the home away from the street and traffic noise.

Colours that must be used for these areas should be quieter, muted colours that are guaranteed to induce a restive atmosphere. Also one should bear in mind that when decorating yin areas, elements such as water features and aquariums should be kept out of these spaces as the movement of water is too yang in characteristic for a bedroom.

Another important aspect that should be considered is that open-plan homes are ideal for Feng Shui since these types of homes allow chi to travel unobstructed from one area to another without any stagnation. In order to get the most from Feng Shui design principles, experts suggest that there should also be a good balance between solid walls (yin in character) and glass or windows (yang in character).

A regular-shaped home as opposed to an irregular-shaped home is preferable when it comes to the design of a house.  The ideal Feng Shui home has a protective feature at the back of house that can either be a real mountain in the distance or a strong, stable feature like another house. It is also important to note that when building, you should build a home that is suitable for the number of people that live in it as it is difficult for chi to move easily in a house that is too big for the number of people living there.

When it comes to incorporating Feng Shui in the home, elements such as colour and shape are essential aspects that need to be considered. Each space needs to be well designed and in proportion in terms of these elements in order for chi to flow properly throughout the home.

If you want a home that is truly in line with Feng Shui and allows for the ultimate flow of chi, then experts suggest that you seek the advice of a professional and qualified Feng Shui master.
