How To

Holiday Candle Displays

Written by Kerry Johnston

Set a welcoming holiday mood with these easy and effective candle displays…

● Arrange a few pillar candles of varying heights in ascending order on a fireplace mantle and wrap the base of each one with wide, shimmering metallic ribbon.

● For an eye-catching table centrepiece, set white pillar candles inside long glass containers or vases and surround them with bits of greenery like trailing ivy, pinecones and the like.

● Tie a few jars with string or garden twine and fill them to the neck with aromatic coffee beans. Set a tea-light candle on top, in the centre, surrounded by the beans. Or, if you prefer the smell of cinnamon, glue cinnamon sticks cut to size around a wide pillar candle using a glue gun.

● Group together candles of assorted sizes in several shades of the same colour. Oranges and browns help set a warm tone, while blues and purples have a cooling effect.

● Line candle-filled lanterns on the floor around the perimeter of a room or place a row of colourful glass votives along a windowsill (take care to tie back curtains and raise blinds).

● Set tea-light candles inside mismatched vintage teacups for a quirky daytime display. A glass cake stand can also be transformed with a grouping of small glass votives.

● Got a few chipped wineglasses? Turn them upside down on a shiny metal tray and rest a few candles on their bases. Decorate the stems with glittering ornaments.

● ‘Frost’ an ordinary pillar candle by coating the surface with crafter’s glue and rolling the candle in Epsom salts.

● Light up a staircase or the path to your front door with a collection of candles in bowls and hurricane lamps.

● Fill jam jars about two-thirds of the way with water and pop in a floating candle. Tie a colourful ribbon around the top of each jar.

● For a stylish affair, you can’t go wrong with a grouping of polished silver and glass candlestick holders with tapered candles.

● Wrap thick pillar candles with holiday-themed ribbon. Secure the overlapping ends of the ribbon with double-sided tape or a glue dot.

● Create a floating candle and floral centrepiece using just the heads of a few blooms interspersed with white floating candles in a large glass bowl.

Safety first! Never leave a lit candle unattended.
