From losing weight to saving money, at the beginning of every year most of us feel inspired to make improvements to our lives. This year instead of making resolutions that won’t make it to February, why not make achievable and sustainable goals for your home?

We spend so much time in our homes- getting ready for the day ahead, unwinding in the evenings, raising our kids, entertaining and making memories- so, some good home improvements could help to support your other goals and aspirations. Here are some affordable ways of improving your home this year:

Clear it of clutter

Every year we accumulate a mountain of things and keep them longer than we need them. The first step to getting rid of this clutter is by going through your home, room-by-room and tossing anything you no longer need, love, wear or use. You should try to do this occasionally throughout the year. Another way to keep clear of clutter, is by finding a system for storing the remaining (useful) items. Some decorators suggest keeping things like DVDs and remotes, (which are useful but not visually appealing) out of sight. A great way to do this is by placing woven baskets in rooms throughout the house.

Make it safer

There is no use in having a beautiful home if it isn’t safe. Start safe guarding your home by ensuring that it is free of potential health hazards and fire risks. Once this is done also practice regular safety drills with your family to ensure awareness of procedures. Adopting new habits like not leaving electrical problems pending, ensuring locks and bolts on doors are always in order, regularly testing and upgrading your security system, can all make your home a safe haven.

Reduce your carbon footprint

Reducing your carbon footprint can also help you shrink your bills. Start by making simple changes in your habits, like switching off lights when you leave the room and not leaving the tap running while brushing your teeth. These small changes can make a huge difference in how much you save. Once you’ve changed your habits, install compact fluorescent bulbs and when making home improvements go for green fixtures like low-flow showerheads.

Set it up for entertaining

During the festive season many of us realise how important and fulfilling it is to spend time with friends and family. So if one of your resolutions is spending more quality time with your loved ones, start by making your home more inviting. Simple updates like adding a few plants and trying a new accent colour on your walls can make your home look and feel fresher. Another way to spice things up is by rearranging your furniture: get new throws, pillows and rugs for your living room and other beautiful yet thoughtful items that will make it more relaxing, perhaps meaningful finds from your holiday. If you’ve got a bit of money to spend, update your garden furniture, install better sound or add in some mood lighting to your entertainment areas. Think of ways to make your guest feel more welcome in your abode.
