Tessa Proudfoot of Tessa Proudfoot and Associates talks about current trends.

Decor and style trends over the past few years seem to have been focused on all things natural, organic and handcrafted combined with their polar opposites – that is man-made super-fibres, and synthetic compounds. This has opened the door to a wide range of eclectic styles that take inspiration both from the “natural” world and the digital age.

“Green and eco-friendly” are the buzz words that have infiltrated all aspects of life. As such decor has had no choice but to follow this lead. In reaction to mass produced non-eco-friendly products, hand-made and uniquely couture-type products have become more and more sought after. Added to this has been the rising trend of the fully automated home that makes it possible to lounge around on your natural bamboo-chenille upholstered sofa while doing your banking on your cellphone!

Spring is about spending more time outdoors, so any products that add ambience to outdoor living are a definite yes. No verandah is complete without a cane bubble swing chair while the Modern Garden Company’s portable fireplace can be moved onto a verandah from anywhere in the house and takes the edge off cooler spring evenings.

Fabrics for this season include a multitude of weather-resistant fabrics that look and feel like luxurious indoor fabrics. St Leger and Viney for example have great all-weather upholstery raffias and linens while Mavromac has a fantastic white all-weather vinyl range. Be on the lookout for the large ranges of printed one-colour geometric designs – these are great as they are classy, fresh and modern. Glazed metallic cottons and glitter-linens are also fashionable; these are essentially 100% natural fabrics with a metallic sheen added to them.
