Hotel Giulia

Written by Jess Binns

A member of the Room Mate hotel group, Hotel Giulia is the one of the latest to join the ever-growing collection of designer boutique hotels situated in “design capital” cities worldwide. Set within the heart of Milan, Giulia can be found in a classic Lombardy building adjacent to the famous Piazza del Doumo.

Designed by one of my all-time favourites, Patricia Urquiola, the 85-room hotel with spa and gym pays exquisite homage to culturally rich Milan. Taking her inspiration from the city itself, Urquiola worked the decor through a series of grids, from the custom carpets to the wallpaper. Further reference was taken from the Piazza del Duomo in its use of the same pink marble on the entrance lobby floors, and the same terracotta bricks.

While these elements are an interpretation of exterior influences, the design influence itself is Urquiola through and through. Vintage pieces are set alongside the latest designer furniture from Cassina. Colour and texture play a major role in channelling an eclectic and fashionable vibe.

This is far from a conservative choice for resting your head; travellers will flock to Giulia for its intense and rich interiors. It’s loud and it’s vibrant, and it’s number one on my list when I finally get to go to Milan.
