How To

How to choose window shutters

Roller shutters can be used as security barriers, doors, blinds and protection from the weather.

Window shutters are incredibly versatile in that they fit comfortably into most home styles. There’s an art to choosing the right ones, as mistakes can be very costly.  Trellidor provides some design considerations to take into account.

Multi-purpose shutters like Trellidor Rollerstyle can fulfil a number of functions, making them very cost effective.  Fitted to windows, they can take the place of curtains, blinds and burglar proofing.

In addition, they assist with internal temperature control, reducing the use of electric fans or air conditioning and saving on electricity.  When closed, they provide protection from rain and high winds that blow in dust or sand.

Aluminium or steel window shutters?

Modern aluminium shutters are lightweight; look attractive from both sides; roll up into a compact and unobtrusive shutter box; and can be fully automated and operated by wall mounted or hand-held remote control. There are a number of slat designs to choose from, and they can be personalised through powder coating them in a colour to suit the home’s colour palette.

What type of window shutter installation is required?

All roller shutters require a shutter box that hides the motor as well as the shutter itself when not in use.  More modern shutters are streamlined and sleek, requiring a smaller, discrete shutter box that’s hardly noticeable, particularly if powder coated to blend in with decor.

Shutters suitable for doors

Shutters can be used as doors as well window protection.  The choice will depend on what function the shutter will perform.  Decorative shutters can be used as room dividers or to visually separate two rooms such as the lounge and diningroom without installing a solid door.

Roller shutters can perform a number of ‘door’ functions.  Use them to turn the bedroom area into a safe zone by installing one in the passage or at the top or bottom of a staircase.  They can be rolled up and out of the way for free movement around the house, and rolled down when protection is needed.

Patio living can be extended by installing roller shutters on the outside of the space.  The shutters can be closed on the bad weather side, allowing longer use of the area instead of being confined inside.

Shutters can also be used to secure the internal doorway between garage and house.  They can replace the door, although they’re usually used in conjunction with a solid door for an extra layer of security.

Long term wear and tear

Robust shutters will have a long life if properly maintained. They may require specialised cleaning; the motor may require occasional servicing; and corrosion may have to be taken into consideration
