How to create a warm and inviting home

There’s nothing better than a home that exudes warmth and character. By taking inspiration from one of his recent décor projects, Dhershan Naidoo from Dhershan Interior Design shares his top tips to get your home entertainment ready by creating warm and inviting spaces that are on trend.

Consider your lighting scheme

Add hanging copper light fittings over a lounge area or kitchen island for an instant update.

The more artisanal in look, the better. A cluster of pendant lights looks fantastic. Low lighting such as lampshades are another easy addition to take a space from contemporary to cosy. I added amber light fixtures over the dining room table in this home to bring a welcoming yellow light to this minimalistic space. The fixtures themselves are bold enough for a contemporary chic vibe.

Favour natural materials

In this home we had to choose between going for glass balustrade screens or a wooden slat screen. I feel that the wood is more modern, and in small doses, softens the space. The dining room has an interesting and natural feel as it is made from raw cut wood with an organic shape. It is kept classy with upholstered, deep buttoned armchairs. We added larger armchairs at both ends of the table and gave them detail with a playful fabric on the back of each of these chairs only.

A subdued colour palette

We’ve been stingy with colour in this masculine home. It’s easy to grow tired of bold colour, and by including these in soft furnishings such as cushions and throws, you can swop them out when you’re looking for a change. In the living room we introduced a muted tone, and then too, only on the armchairs.

Incorporate layers

Contemporary spaces are highly functional and simplistic. Rather than add objects, add warmth by layering textures (materials, fabrics, etc.) on necessary items. You can also layer with wallpaper. The treatments I selected in the bathroom and the atruim are bold features, but the restrained florals only span a small area and are easily changeable.

Neutrals have moods too

Home owners who favour clean-lined, well-organised spaces often end up creating sterile, uninviting spaces. This can be avoided by choosing a variety tone and using its most muted notes on walls. Never ask for white paint; decide which white you have in mind and what undertones will convey the mood and atmosphere you aim to create.

Show off your personality

Add character to your home with art and trendy focal points. Your home should be about you and you should display items that bring you joy and have a story to share over dinner. In this project I included a gold side table in the living room for a bit of glamour. Metallics such as gold, bronze and copper are eye-catching and can instantly make a space feel more sophisticated.
