How to organise your closet

A messy closet can be a royal pain. Things seem to disappear and you always find everything but the one item you are looking for. However, most people find the task of organising a closet a daunting one to say the least, and don’t have the time or energy to spend hours sorting through and folding stuff. Here are a few tips to get your closet organised.

Sort through the clutter

The first step is pretty straight-forward – pull everything out of your cupboard and get rid of anything you don’t wear anymore. Experts say you should consider the following when decluttering your wardrobe:

  • Have you worn or used the item in your closet in the past year?
  • Does the item of clothing fit you properly, can it be altered?
  • Would you buy the same item if you saw it in a shop?

If your answer is no to any of the above questions, get rid of the item, or even better, donate it to charity.

Categorise

Devise a system to organise everything in your closet. Categorise clothes according to item, length and occasion  . For example, keep all trousers together, all shirts together and so forth. After that you can separate items even further by occasion; smart trousers together, casual jeans together, length and colour. Remember to keep all your wardrobe staples within easy reach. To keep things under control, fold and put your clothes back in the closet immediately after washing and ironing. This way you won’t have mountains of clothes to deal with later.

Organise

If your closet is small, organise your clothes according to season. Store your seasonal clothes elsewhere to create more space for the clothes you are currently wearing. Use storage organisers such as boxes, shelving and bins as well as slim-line hangers, instead of bulky wooden ones, to maximise closet space. Don’t forget to pick a system for organising your shoes. Clear, plastic boxes are the best way to display your shoes. You can also keep your shoes in their original boxes or in shoe bags that hang at the back of your closet door.
