How to organise your wardrobe

Say goodbye to clutter with expert advice on how to organise your wardrobe.

Treat your closet like a store

“When organising a closet we like to start by getting clients to go shopping in their own wardrobes. We ask them to pick out their favourite outfits and shoes for summer and winter and for various occasions first and to place them to one side. We encourage them to choose only the pieces that they love to wear and that make them feel happy, as well as essential basics like socks and underwear.

“Next we move everything else to a different closet in the house or pack what’s left away in boxes. Anything that doesn’t come out of those boxes for 12 months (unless it’s rare activity-specific items like ski clothes or evening wear) is then donated. Once your closet is only full of things you actually wear and love, it’s easy to get organised and to keep it that way.” – Lucy le Roux, director of Illuminate Home Staging

Work with colour

“We’re a big fan of Marie Kondo and really believe in her approach of making sure that everything in a cupboard is visible without having to move items. Most of us get dressed based on a particular colour we feel like wearing or an item we have in mind, which is usually found by looking for the colour or print.

“We encourage clients to arrange their clothes by colour by hanging similar dresses or suits together or grouping colours together in the same category – i.e. grey athleisure wear – so that everything is easy to find.

“When organising drawers, instead of piling items on top of each other, fold them up into little swiss rolls so that each piece is visible from the top when you open the drawer. Once you are done your closet will actually resemble a clothing store and you’ll enjoy using the pieces you have more.” – Lucy le Roux, director of Illuminate Home Staging

Organisation is key

“Having the correct storage solution for your wardrobe is critical to maintaining an organised space. Store items that are meant to be hung on the same type and colour hanger to ensure your pieces have a blank canvas. Avoid hanging multiple clothes on the same hanger.

“Shelved clothing should ideally be folded the same size and could even be colour-coordinated. An even better solution than shelves is Blum’s LEGRABOX free deep pullout drawers with glass fronts and sides. Take it up another level and include inner dividing solutions such as Blum’s AMBIA-LINE.” – Charlene le Roux, showroom specialist at Blum South Africa
