Ikea and Ilse Crawford

Written by Jess Binns

Being one of my all time favourite interior designers, I was super excited to discover that Ilse Crawford is the brains behind the new naturalistic range, Sinnerlig, for Ikea.

Launching in August, the range includes a variety of decor items such as tables, stools, ceramics and glass products. Utilising all natural elements, the Crawford team paid acute attention to environmental production, opting for greener alternatives.

Cork makes a big appearance, favoured as a material that requires re-invention as the use of cork declines for bottles. The stunning bamboo pendant shades which concertina and stacking grass bowls can be packaged to best utilise space when air freighting.

Another example of eco-friendly credentials within the range are the cushion fabrics, made from a cotton blend, which were produced using less water than is normally required in such a process. Apart from Ikea doing their part to save the planet, this range was designed for global use. Ilse explains “It’s supposed to work in a bathroom in Mumbai as well as a kitchen in Neasden, it has to fit into people’s lives”.

I can certainly see the South African market going crackers for this simplistic, natural look. Which begs the question whether Ikea will ever grace SA with it’s presence? I’m keeping my fingers crossed!
