Improving old furniture

I have some really old antique furniture in my apartment. I don’t want to get rid of it for sentimental reasons, but I would like to upgrade and update it. How could I do this?

Lize Jansen van Rensburg, St Leger and Viney: Family antique pieces are special and will be hard to replace with new mass produced furniture.

Tone it down to an earthy look. Sand down the piece to a natural raw wood state, change the knobs to something brassy or off-white and add natural linen to this look.

Jazz it up to a glamorous state by painting the piece in a high-gloss paint and adding a wacky, interesting fabric or detail to the piece.

Look at current trends. See what tickles your fancy, look at your furniture and decide how you can apply your inspiration to update the piece and incorporate it into your house better. You have to decide if you want the piece to blend in or be a statement.
