Bedroom How To

In full bloom

There’s a revival in new-generation botanicals. So dress your bedroom in the latest nature-inspired prints.

“Traditional floral print may not be the first thing that springs to mind when picturing a chic, well-designed home. But don’t be fooled by the old-fashioned reputation of these classic patterns,” says Estel Grobler, senior designer and product developer at Volpes.

“Whether you opt for contemporary or traditional, loud or subtle, there are many ways to incorporate florals into your bedroom scheme,” says Gail Butler, owner of Halogen International.

Bedroom bliss

One of the easiest ways to introduce trendy florals to your bedroom is by updating your bed linen. “Choose from delicate classic botanical designs to create a peaceful, pretty retreat or bold prints to make a style statement,” suggests Grobler.

The trick in creating a modern floral-inspired room is the colour palette. If you prefer a modern style, stick to one colourway for the room and linen; keep the balance of the rooms and linens in one matching colour,” suggests Grobler.

Craft a boho or shabby-chic feel by introducing colours picked from your main print. Or be bold and mix different floral designs.

“Layer and combine florals of different scales or prints for an on-trend look,” suggests Butler. For something more subtle, opt for a watercolour-inspired print.

The writing’s on the wall

One of the best ways to make a style statement in your bedroom is by covering a feature wall with a floral motif.

“Botanicals have been in high demand and they look great when you wrap the room in a soft pastel floral or a gentle watercolour floral,” says Haidee Kramer, director of Dreamweaver Studios.

Create a tranquil and relaxing ambience by combining soft, whimsical rose patterns with crisp white bed linen and bleached wooden floors.

Murals are a great way to add the wow factor into a bedroom. “They add grand scale and a completely new look,” says Kramer. Go for bold drama with an oversized pattern.

TIP: For a pretty vintage look, smaller-scale florals reminiscent of yesteryear can create a great look.
