India Mahdavi

Written by Jess Binns

India Mahdavi is one of a kind. She falls into a category of designer that has the ability to achieve emotional responses from her many iconic interiors. I would go as far to say that her interiors could be referred to as ‘a work of art’.

India believes in creating happiness within a space through colour and texture. Her childhood was a wide and varied one, where the family moved from one country to another. This left India open to absorb her surroundings of differing cultures. She refers to the US in the 60’s as being full of colour, vibrant and fun, where in contrast, Germany brings memories of ‘dark and grey tones’.

Her obsession with techincolour films in the early years has strongly influenced her signature look. Defining her style as ‘pop orientalism’, India’s interiors come across as daring, unique and edgy. In 2014 Mahdavi created a vision of pink in London’s well-known Sketch restaurant that really captures the essence of this quirky establishment.

I find her work very appealing, she has a fearless nature when is comes to colour. You will also find that Mahdavi uses many of her own furniture creations in her projects. They tend to be elegant, bordering on flamboyant and naturally colourful. From hotels to designer fashion stores, from restaurants to houses, India Mahdavi continues to flourish in the interiors world.

Best wishes,
