Interior renovation masterclass

In the world of interior design, few things are more satisfying than a fantastic before-and-after interior.

Olala Interiors visualised the hidden potential waiting to be uncovered within the walls of this Umdloti beachfront apartment, and magically transformed the space. It used specially selected fabrics, furniture and carefully curated artwork, together with new modern flooring and elegantly luxurious wall treatments. These all combine to create a sleek, contemporary interior, worlds away from the dated original.

The two-bedroom apartment offers a lot in the way of contemporary luxury, and the striking detailing throughout perfectly accentuates the craftsmanship – from bespoke lighting to handmade rugs and lavish, velvet headboards and glossy, lustrous finishes. These are all wrapped up in a moody, muted palette.

Along the exposed brick corridor/passage, you’ll find the main bedroom. This encapsulates the essence of modest sophistication. The en suite bathroom is a serene oasis. The guest room is just as sumptuous, with simple pieces, streamlined for modern appeal.

Living area

An ethically sourced, hand-stitched custom-made classic genuine Nguni cow hide rug with geometric blocks grounds this space. Black genuine leather was used for the coffee table top.

Living area

Light oak floors set off against gloss 2k lacquer charcoal surfaces. The Zinc Kuva Cay scatter cushions are a modern take on an African tribal pattern.

Guest bedroom

This 3D velvet with graphic hexagonal structure is softened by a premium triple quilting to give a plush finish. An explosion of irregular feathers that appear hand-drawn on a metallic-look ground form the scatter fabric. The wallpaper is Dreaming Frost by Jessica Zoob in panels – a dreamy landscape inspired by abstract painting skilfully recreated as a large-scale wallcovering.

Master bedroom

The blanket box features Zinc Schuss Tungsten cross-hatch designed fabric with a sketched, hand-drawn effect and an Armani Casa Pantheon vinyl wall covering on non-woven backing. The sumptuous plain velvet panelled headboard is paired with a blue fox faux fur throw – an understated, soft blue shade that adds character.
