Island style

Written by Sharon Wagner

As stylish as they are functional, a kitchen island is an attractive focal-point that can be customised according to the size and style of your kitchen – as well as your budget. Here are some ideas to make it your own.

Go for contrasting colours: Create a lively kitchen space by painting your kitchen island a vivid colour like fresh, lemony yellow, energising green or fire engine red. This will give your kitchen another dimension using contrasting colours.

Try a non-traditional island: An antique-style desk can be used as a kitchen island to give it a period feel. A small farmhouse style island in a corner of the kitchen will keep your kitchen cozy. These additions are well suited for dainty little kitchens that don’t need extravagant pieces of furniture.

Complement with unique seating: The chairs or seating arrangements you select help to characterise the mood of the kitchen. Bold bar stools can be used to add a harder metallic edge to the kitchen, making it a great space for cocktails or snacks. Wooden stools will give the space a more casual, laid-back feel.

Repurpose: Convert a dresser, table or desk into your very own kitchen island. The extra storage compartments will provide ample storage space. With a fresh coat of paint, and the addition of wood panels and a towel bar on the side, the piece will transform into a one-of-a-kind kitchen island.

Consider this: Whilst functionality is key, make sure you put additional thought into what hangs above your island. Draw extra attention to your island with unique light fixtures, or a copper pot and pan collection hanging above it.
