I was paging through SA Home Owners from 2010 through to our latest October issue, and was just amazed at the different types of lighting options for the kitchen. Being one of the places in which I spend a lot of time at home, appropriate lighting is so important for me. Bright, garish fluorescent lighting is very passé (and doesn’t do a thing for my complexion), but softer lighting, especially if you have a dimming function available, is wonderful for creating the amount of light you need at any given time.

I love starlights, which blink down on a room, and using the focus lighting over the centre island is very practical for this workspace. And using downlights under the cupboards creates a certain ambience, while ensuring that if you go for a midnight snack you won’t trip over the cat sleeping on the kitchen floor. Or go the opposite way and add lights above a floating bulkhead, for a smooth lighting option. If you have beautiful glassware or a gorgeous heirloom tea set from Granny, put some gentle lighting in your glass-front cupboards to honour these attractive pieces.
