Leman Locke

Written by Jess Binns

Leman Locke is fresh on the accommodation circuit, taking the title of one of the first design-led “aparthotels”. This very new concept challenges the more traditional avenues of places to stay, by offering an amalgamation of the boutique hotel, which offers style and comfort, with the function and privacy of a serviced apartment.

Launched by SACO, the Serviced Apartment Company, this new hybrid of 168 rooms recently opened its doors in London. Designed by New York-based practice Grzywinski+Pons, the idea was to create a base for young, creative individuals whose work presents a more nomadic lifestyle. “Our process was driven by the search for a way to hold on to the aspirational excitement of a hotel stay, while enjoying the advantages of something more akin to a home in one’s adoptive city, no matter how long – or short – the stay.”

The result is a perfectly executed building with striking design details, such as punctured walls and a spiral staircase. In order to create a harmonious ambience, Grzywinski+Pons designed the majority of furniture, from beds to light fittings.

The colour palette is fresh, modern and understated, with an air of sophistication. Each space has been carefully styled with a strong focus on bespoke detail.

A serious amount of design thinking has gone into this new venture. I think the age of the “aparthotel” has just arrived!

Best wishes,
