Light and comfy

When it comes to embarking on a new build, the owner of this house, situated on the banks of Hartbeespoort Dam, has this advice: “Take your time, and don’t rush into anything.” In fact, it took about six attempts for the architect to get the design of this house right, but the precision and detail, along with “the input of a lot of love”, from the owner has paid off.

With a simple, yet modern architectural style, the house is intended to make the most of its canal frontage, while still offering a practical space for a family.

The downstairs layout is open plan, with each area flowing easily to the next. Not only is this functional, but it creates a sense of space, aided by the use of large glass windows and doors, and a double-volume ceiling.

“I did want the home to feel light,” says the home owner, “but also comfy.” There’s a wood-burning fireplace in the sitting area, for cold evenings, and the patio benefits from air conditioning on those exceptionally hot summer days.

A decor scheme of blue and neutral colours, combined with different textures such as natural wood, was applied throughout the house, to reflect and complement the waterways and parkland outside. This works particularly well in the main bedroom, as the tones have a serene effect. An intimate corner of the room provides the perfect spot for sitting and enjoying the view.

The property’s surroundings were one of the key factors for the owner in choosing this site. “I even started camping here when the building began, and hardly went home, as the stand’s view is so stunning,” she says.

Fortunately, she can now wake up in her own bed in the finished product. “I love Sunday mornings, when I can hear the birds sing and watch the hot air balloons float over us, while sipping my morning coffee on the patio,” she adds.
