Light up your life

By Justine Olivier

In any room, adequate lighting is essential, and it is no different in the kitchen.

Louise Haupt of Eagle Lighting says “Lighting serves either a functional and/or a decorative purpose.” Functional lighting is pivotal especially if one is cooking and needs to see what is going on. However, the problem is that this kind of lighting is harsh. Ambient light plays an important role – it adds a soft, warm and more welcoming feeling.

The perfect kitchen finds the correct balance between functional and decorative lighting, blending them skillfully together.

Here’s what the experts have to say:

– Fluorescent lighting is a necessity as it covers a large surface area with light, and is extremely convenient for cooking. Ensure that the correct fluorescent bulb is chosen, one that will sufficiently light up the entire space.

– Downlights are fast becoming the latest trend in kitchen lighting design. The advantage of this type of lighting is that the luminosity can be controlled by means of a dimmer.

– Pendant lights have also become very popular. They hang from the ceiling, and are usually positioned over kitchen countertops or island counters. They are ideal for the purpose of further highlighting these functional and much used work areas.

– Strip lights are extremely useful as they are able to light specific areas without casting shadows. One of the benefits of this type of lighting is that it creates an attractive ambience when the main fittings are switched off.

– Accent lighting is primarily decorative – often dictating the style of the kitchen by adding a third dimension to the room and highlighting special features, artworks, or food presentation areas.

An important factor to keep in mind is the overall brightness of the room. The last thing someone wants is to walk into a kitchen that closely resembles the atmosphere of a hospital with its bright fluorescent lighting.

“Over 90% of kitchens today are open-plan, either leading directly on to the dining room or the lounge. Open-plan living requires a balance of high and low lighting. It is therefore essential to ensure that the lighting of one’s kitchen complements the surrounding rooms.”
