A year in view of spectacular houses on the architectural, building and design markets, one thing can be agreed on: open-plan living is still the way forward. This home owner was sure of one thing – in this home open-plan living would be taken to a whole new dimension.
The concept of this house evolved over the past few years in an attempt to perfect the spacious and flexible open-plan living concept without losing the intimacy and cosiness that was required by the home owners. To that end, the indoor living areas and outdoor patios and gardens have been incorporated into one large flowing living area with beams, ceiling bulkheads and furniture, defining various living spaces.
The large open-plan spaces also lend themselves to flexibility. Room functions may be altered by simply moving furniture around. Large glazed windows and folding stacking doors convert the public spaces into one big covered verandah once opened.
This complements both the South African lifestyle and golf course living. When privacy is required, Lee’s Curtains window application solutions have ensured that the home could be comfortably concealed if need be.
“We have purposely kept the external architectural design of the house simple and without clutter. Highly stylised architecture tends to date rather quickly,” notes the home owner, who was also the builder on this project.
While there isn’t any particular theme to the home, each room was treated as a unique area with its own identity. The theme that runs through the entire house is one of uncompromised comfort, understated opulence and luxury. Special care has also been taken not to fill the large interior spaces with gratuitous clutter.
Ruth Art further enhanced the home by providing artwork that allows the client’s personality to shine artistically throughout the rooms.
A further invitation to luxury is offered to these home owners by the Summer Place Spas and Baths Parisienne jetted spa bath. The jets in this tub are strategically located for deep massage to every beneficial area of the body, offering comfort and indulgence to its users.
At the end of the project, the home owner describes his feelings of being overwhelmingly impressed. The large spaces, which he describes as big enough to easily accommodate 100 guests, is also intimate enough for a quiet evening for two. Guests can also be easily entertained at the bar area. This impressive bar was installed by Mediterranean Bars and is made from pink beech veneer – the same material was also used on the television cabinets creating a synergy in the home.
The Omega Systems’ installations included the multi-room audio system as well as the home theatre system, making home entertaining easy and enjoyable for these home owners. Adding to the entertainment factor, the pool table, supplied by Lectron Billiards, ensures that amusement always ensues.
The position of the home was selected to maximise all the external elements, one of which being the beautiful Crocodile River on the estate.
Not only does this offer a beautiful and scenic ambience, but it is also a way for the home owners to maintain a green lifestyle.
Thanks to Scenic Blue, all rainwater is directed into a massive (320 000 litre) underground water reservoir.
This is used to irrigate the entire garden, and all excess water flows through the system down into the river.
A view right through the house across the swimming pool and onto the golf course is also afforded by the beautiful entrance hall – one of the owner’s favourite areas.
The sculpturally impressive marble staircase forms the focal point of the house, and is visible from most areas. Distinctive Designs managed to further enhance this with designer silk trees and plants, giving the interiors a calming and contemporary feel as plush as the magnificent outdoors of the property.
