At this discerning home, where less is more in every sense of the word, the dynamics of the architecture are emphasised because there is little interference with simplistic lines and clean geometric scales.
The same principle applies to the interior where furniture and fixtures were positioned and installed in a minimalist style. Dynamic angles accentuate generous proportions at all levels, where every corner and individual space reflects forethought in both design and decor.
The owners, who are originally from abroad with little knowledge of the lifestyle available in the quaint village of Hermanus, needed to find an architect who
could produce their dream home. Their architect, Andrew Finlayson, who himself was once a local resident, came to their rescue and helped them find their dream plot where they could enjoy the dual benefits of magnificent views as well as a central position within the town.
Andrew says his client’s brief was for “simplicity, clean flowing lines and not too much texture”. He says their need for a minimalist environment, comfortable living in all weather conditions, and most of all maximum privacy, was possible to satisfy due to the sloped position of the plot. As the house is south-facing, the design allowed access to the ground from different levels while maximising the beautiful ocean views. It resulted in one level being built where the northern light flows straight through the interior living areas, leading onto the garden at street level. For privacy, another level was created only half a flight of stairs down to the guest area, overlooking the luxurious pool and outdoor patio areas, with spectacular ocean views.
Shaped through a palette of bright colours, a discerning sense of style, and brilliant visual perception, this home offers its inhabitants a distinguished living environment.
