Set high up in the Brettenwood Coastal Estate, on the northern shores of KwaZulu-Natal, lies this Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired house, which owner Brett Hulett happily calls home.

Aside from the distraction of the 180° view, the most immediate impression is how this home contains and carries off the marriage of old and new. Brett’s late wife, Margie, was an avid collector and maker of furnishings that decorator Fiona, from Studio Ten, wanted to celebrate within the modern setting. The brief set by Brett and his daughter Vanessa was to make the house a home.

Set on one level, the design features polished marble floors which guide you through each living area into the fitted, plush-carpeted bedrooms. Creating a cosy ambience, the patterned cushions and full-length curtains soften the rooms, all the while retaining a calmness throughout the house. Built-in cabinetry blends into the neutral backgrounds, creating a light and spacious feel.

Floor-to-ceiling windows open the house to the outdoors, with breathtaking views down to the Indian Ocean. The balau timber deck seems endless, extending as far as the eye can see.

With homes and green hills rolling towards the sea, a glass in hand is all that is required. Brett sums it up: “I don’t close my curtains at night; gazing out at the twinkling lights is the best bedtime story.”
