Modern perfection

The owner’s vision was to create a modern, contemporary masterpiece, as he believes contemporary is timeless. This vision was turned into a reality with the use of natural elements such as steel and wood. The predominant colours are black, white and grey.

Since the home owners are frequent travellers, they decided to use an international theme, with inspiration from major trend-setting cities that frequently appear in the artworks around the home. Throughout the house, a great deal of attention has been given to detail and the owners’ quest for perfection.

The house boasts three levels, with four bedrooms, two en suite bathrooms, two freestanding bathrooms and a guest bathroom, a luxury kitchen, scullery and pantry, dining room, TV room, and a large entertainment area with a spa bath and pool, as well as three garages, staff accommodation and a storeroom.

A grand double-volume feature wall in the entertainment room displays famous personalities such as Marilyn Monroe and Charlie Chaplin. But what is most striking is the fish tank built into the wall, in keeping with modern trends.

The use of black-hinged folding doors allows a good view of the double-level pool, jetted hot tub and waterwise garden. The home owners can relax and enjoy a full view of the pool, or watch television with surround sound while enjoying the fireplace and bar.

The house is ultramodern in design, but manages to create a warm atmosphere. Furnished with a grey table and upholstered chairs, the dining room has soft lighting, creating a cosy feel, and flows effortlessly into the open-plan kitchen with an informal breakfast area. The white kitchen cabinetry stands out vividly against black walls, and the long, white countertops offer plenty of working space.

The main bedroom offers a clean, minimalist look, with grey slate tiles that create the perfect flooring for a large white bed and headboard, from under which soft lighting creates a mellow glow. In the ensuite bathroom, rimless shower doors, twin basins and twin showers ensure an elegant, modern place in which to unwind after a hectic day.

Construction of this home took over a year. When building a home, the home owner feels there is too much emphasis on reselling. “Build, buy and renovate what you want, not what you think others will one day want to buy from you. Your primary residence is undoubtedly an investment, but that’s not its primary purpose,” he says.
