How To

Must-haves for a laundry room

Written by Simone Suckerman

A laundry room is all about convenience, efficiency and organisation. With a space dedicated to everything necessary to clean and care for clothing, doing the laundry is a breeze and with just a little designer flair, a boring old washer and dryer stall can be transformed into a beautiful sanctuary; perfumed with the sumptuous smell of clean linen, and warmed by the drier.

Must-haves for a laundry room:

• deep basins for hand washing,
• rubber gloves for handwashing,
• sorting baskets for whites, darks, delicates, towels, linen or separate baskets for each member of the family,
• a stain chart up can be pinned to a wall for easy reference,
• a holdall for money, keys, pens etc that are left in pockets, and popped buttons,
• a bin for lint, tissues, paper etc that are left in pockets,
• an ironing board with a plug close by,
• a closet hang bar to place wet washing to dry or to store clothing that has been ironed.

For your comfort, you can raise front-loading washers and dryers off the floor to save you having to do a lot of bending and reaching.

Aesthetically, light colour paints and cabinetry give the room a bright, airy, clean feel. Pretty mesh baskets can be used to hold washing pegs, soaps, detergents, paper towel, sewing kits, and shoe care products. Or open shelving designed around the appliances to stock soap, stain removers, detergents, folded washing, and coordinated laundry baskets looks neat and keeps things accessible.

If you’re limited for space, you can stack the tumble dryer on top of the washing machine and mount a fold-up table on a wall which can act as a surface to fold washing. A good purchase is an extendable drying rack, which can retract flush against a wall.
