At SA Home Owner, we love a good cup of coffee. And we all agree that when it’s done well, coffee isn’t just a beverage – it’s a good companion. One we can rely on to help us get up in the morning, warm us up on chilly days and to stay motivated when deadlines are looming. That’s why I’ve asked some members of the SA Home Owner team to tell us about their favourite coffee shops.

Features Writer and Blogger Refilwe Boikanyo says:

Situated directly below The Neighbourgoods Market in Braamfontein, Father Coffee is a roastery and espresso bar that is less than a year old, but already feels like a beloved neighbourhood café. It has a warm and welcoming ambience created by the friendly staff as well as its modern and minimalist design. At Father customers can enjoy their South American and African bean coffee while using free wifi or grab a takeaway and buy home ground or whole beans that are roasted on site to make the perfect cuppa at home.

Business Manager Claire Morgan says:

Vida e caffè, for the personal touches – being greeted by name, knowing my order, ice-cold water with lemon while waiting, and the Lindt chocolate at the end to go with my coffee. I love the skinny latte. They also sell great eco mugs which get you a further discount on your coffee if you take it along to be filled up; and of course, they have a great Vida app to help you find your closest Vida when on the road.

Editor Kerry Hayes says:

I have tried coffees and cappucinos literally across the world, and to date, my favourite one is the “Joburg’s best” cappucino from Woolworths – especially if I have it with a double shot espresso for that extra kick.  If you travel locally, you will find a Woolies coffee bar at most of the major local airports. So you’ll never be coffee-less again! If you are going to Woolies just for the java, I suggest you phone beforehand to find out if a coffee bar/restaurant is available.

National Sales Manager Christell Bisett says:

My favourite coffee shop is Truth on Buitenkant Street in Cape Town. It is funky and vibey, the crew is friendly and quirky, and the coffee is absolutely to die for. Truth offers five blends from its vintage roaster, each created to resonate with your different coffee needs, and resurrects you from your morning or late afternoon coma. I never leave without having the skinny cappuchino (double-shot-Phewie!) and a fresh croissant.

Art Director Annie Fraser says:

Nice on Fourth Avenue Parkhurst. Nice is relaxed, friendly and keen to have dogs sit on the pavement with their owners. They always leave bowls of water out for our four-legged kids. They also have a lovely “little bookshop” with wonderful children’s books so you can buy a few gifts before you leave. My favourite thing to order is the half & half (one eggie basket & one set of crumpets with strawberries, bacon and syrup). I also love their cakes.

Durban Account Manager Avril Elias says:

Market on the Berea in Durban is my favourite coffee shop. The food and the service there is fantastic and I love sitting outside under the trees there because it’s such a relaxed environment. I always have a latte but never leave without popping into the small décor store next door (Shoppe).  I also recommend their Eggs Benedict (with a twist) – it is to die for!

Digital Projects Manager Shereen Lurie says:

Belle’s Patisserie at the Blubird Shopping Centre because their coffee and patisserie selection is mouth-wateringly delicious. I absolutely adore their Red Velvet Cheesecake and Tiramisu creations – each mouthful is pure decadence. But I find it difficult to stick to just one patisserie as each one is just as good as the next, so I try to sample something different each time I visit. I recommend that you try their high tea, which features a selection of dainty croissants, sandwiches, brioches and cakes, served with a tea of your choice. And you’ll also want to sample their cronuts – they’re the best in Jhb.

  • Shop 16 Blubird Shopping Centre on Atholl Oaklands Road, Birnam, Johannesburg. Call 011 440 4474 or visit info@bellespatisserie.co.za
