Seating has evolved from a functional furniture item into a bold fashion accessory.

Although many may see a chair as a mere piece of furniture, seating has become a much sought-after fashion accessory that could either make or break the look and feel of a room.

“Seating decor has definitely evolved from the overstuffed, puffy fashion to a cleaner, classic, contemporary look. Our sofas and chairs are a vital part of our lifestyle, as we often find ourselves ‘cocooning’ into them.” says Marianna Furman of Klooftique.

With a boom in different designs, materials, bold and exotic fabrics, seating today has become a key essential in the decor and theme of a room, requiring a lot more attention than ever before. “Seating is a tricky element to decide on,” agrees Robert Thomson, owner of www.roberthomson.com. “You have to consider the overall design aesthetic, while not sacrificing on comfort. I always suggest that people consider its overall purpose and level of use. ”

While this will generally separate seating into two categories – occasional and used items – no matter what kind of seating you are looking at adding, the piece should always complement the space and theme of the room.

“We love themed homes, but it is also very different to use furniture that doesn’t all blend and match the theme. Add a piece or two that is totally different, but cheeky in its own way,” agrees Roy Griffiths and Martin Harris of Griffiths and Griffiths.

Whether you choose solid wood dining room chairs, perspex or polycarbonate kitchen nook stools, fabric sofas or leather chairs, important factors to consider would be durability, texture and a good mix of fibres to deal with everyday use, but above all, never compromise on comfort.
