Putting down roots

A striking glass-topped tree-root side table is the first thing you see when you enter this four-bedroom home in a quiet housing estate to the north of Johannesburg. After that, it’s the 100-year-old wild olive tree outside, perfectly framed by the double-volume window in the open-plan living room.

Taking these first impressions into consideration, it’s not surprising that the abundance of trees in this estate was one of the reasons why the home owners chose to settle here.

“Everyone who visits loves the ease of indoor-outdoor living we’ve created,” the owner reveals. “It looks and feels good to live in this setting with a large tree; it makes it feel as though you’re living in the bush.”
