Red Barn

Written by Jess Binns

I wish more of us invested in restoring old buildings, I know that this normally means more heartache and more hoops to jump, but the outcome far outweighs this when you end up with the home of your dreams which is also steeped in history.

A fine example of building restoration is the ‘Red Barn’, based in the Ukermark region of Germany. Built in the 1900’s this rustic outbuilding was home to a farmer and his animals, the beautifully beaten up timber framework and worn brick floors give away the hard working nature this barn witnessed over the years.

Having not been lived in for 20 years the owners, who acquired the land for its peace and tranquillity, decided to renovate. When I say renovate, I refer to a transformation that is beyond successful, an ecstatic marriage between the new and the old. Responsible for carrying out the renovation was architect, Thomas Kroger. Thomas brought in masses of new timber and white paint to balance out the heaviness of the grand barn structure.

This resulted in a very modern feel in certain pockets of the home. Turn a corner from one of these fresh, new spaces and you are instantly transported back as the existing elements of the barn greet you. Finished off with a stylish interior scheme, Red Barn can be rented out as a holiday home.

Best wishes,
