SA’s Most Beautiful Object at Design Indaba 2014

Our senior writer, Refilwe Boikanyo has jetted off to the Mother City to mingle with the countries top artists, designers, journalists and cultural commentators at this year’s Design Indaba. Today marks the official opening of this much-anticipated event, which sees the Cape Town International Convention Centre, as its host venue for the duration of the week.

Now in its 19th year, the expo is dubbed “the conference for creativity” because it is a showcase as well as a celebration of the very best South African design products and ideas. And one of the highlight features of the expo is the Design Indaba’s annual “Most Beautiful Object in South Africa” (MBOISA) award.

This year’s MBOISA nominations range from architecture to fashion and even film.

According to the Design Indaba organisers, the objects that are selected are “more than just objects of visual delight; MBOISA encourages a wider definition of beauty – one that encapsulates attributes such as social significance, economic impact, usability, sustainability and even humour”.

The designs of all the MBOISA finalists will be on display at the Design Indaba expo, which is open to the public from Friday, 28 February to Sunday, 2 March at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. The winner, who will be determined by public vote, will be announced on the afternoon of Sunday, 2 March at the expo. Take a look at the finalists in our slideshow and find out how to cast your vote here.
