The Scandi-style kitchen

Written by Janine Jorgensen

The Scandinavian aesthetic of simplicity, functionality and beautiful craftsmanship is proving more popular than ever in home decor. It’s a style that’s ideal for the modern kitchen. Here’s how to get the look:

1. Keep it white

Typical modern Scandinavian homes feature a largely white backdrop, and the kitchen is no exception. It’s a clean look that can be punctuated with dark greys, pale blues and pastel green and pink.

2. Add wooden finishes

Craftmanship is key to achieving high quality form and function in Scandinavian design. Wood is a material that can show off these elements and also adds warmth to all that white. Use it in kitchen countertops, flooring and furniture, such as chairs and a table.

3. Make it open plan

Food and family are very much part of the Scandinavian lifestyle, so kitchens are open plan with areas for dining and relaxing.

4. Ensure it’s functional

Maximise the potential of the kitchen space through open shelving for storage and display. Use task lighting over counters and install more ambient pedants for the dining area. Choose appliances that are sleek and attractive if there’s no space to conceal them.

5. Personalise the space

The Scandinavian kitchen has an eclectic element, with personal accessories, such as family heirlooms, carefully combined with more modern pieces. The key is to keep the space clutter free to avoid it from looking too busy.
