Small lounge

I have a very small lounge area and would like it to look bigger than it really is. Is there any rule that applies to creating the feeling of more space. Most people say that I should paint everything white, but I also love colour. What would you suggest?

Desmond Archibald, Desmond Archibald Interiors: I do think that you should stay true to yourself and not let other people influence your basic style characteristics. There are two different ways to solve your problem.

Firstly, it is true that by painting everything white, you will be able to create a spacious feeling. Just remember that all furniture and accessories will stand out against the white walls, thus creating a sharper visual picture.

The second option, which would work better in your case, is to use a darker colour as a focus wall. By painting a wall darker, you create the effect of depth, and the wall tends to recede into the background. I would suggest using two different tone values in one colour pallet, as this will create a flow and not close the room up – all with the added benefit of still using colour
