French country design often incorporates ruffles, distressed woodwork and soft, patterned fabrics. Using some of these ideas, the home owner aimed at a laid-back feeling and a “farmhouse look”.

Including four bedrooms, four bathrooms, a guest bathroom, a family room, a gym and movie theatre, the home allows breathtaking views of the rolling hills, vineyards and Table Mountain through the lounge and sitting room.

The owner singles out the kitchen and the family room as her favourite rooms, and it’s easy to understand why. The focal point of the home is the kitchen; being able to create a big, farmhouse kitchen in front, with a smaller, servitude kitchen at the back, is any serious cook’s dream come true. The 2m-long Lacanche cooker is certainly the showpiece; it has a pasta cooker, multi-cooker plancha, four burners, gas oven and two simmer ovens.

The main bedroom features reclaimed wooden furniture, a state-of-the-art fireplace incorporated into the existing hearth, high wooden ceilings and rafters with a glamorous crystal chandelier. A very homely feeling is created with the nostalgia of years gone by. A natural palette was employed throughout the house, together with tasteful, striped wallpaper.

The main bathroom is designed like a conservatory, allowing it to be bathed in natural light, which reflects onto twin marble and granite basins. Very stately, it offers a view of the gardens and vineyard.

The home theatre is equipped with leather recliners and ottomans, with large images of movie icons adorning the walls to complete the theatre ambience. The patio, with picturesque views of the vineyard, has an authentic pizza oven, making this home an entertainer’s dream.

One of the challenges of building this house, according to the home owner, was to find an architect who could translate their vision into reality. The brief was to create a farmhouse feel; all aspects of the house, from the decor to the kitchen, would reiterate this, in a sophisticated and elegant way. And the result is “exactly what I wanted”, the owner says.
