Beauty is precious; and more precious is a combination of beauty, space, comfort, style and home. This property, in the heart of the Western Cape, is an unknown treasure of hectares of cultivated land, modern decor and a home that epitomises comfortable, tasteful family living.

The home itself is simply and impeccably decorated; the owners are art enthusiasts, and wooden and metal sculptures, paintings and prints embellish the walls and hallways.

Each space in the home is designed so that it is optimised for light and function. The downstairs entrance is open plan – the whole floor can be seen from the front door.

The living area is in the foreground, featuring cosy seating around a wooden table, and insured for cold weather with an indoor fire. The neighbouring sitting room is comfortably arranged for the home owners to relax in a private setting, or to enjoy an afternoon with their guests – optimum sunlight and extensive views make for the ideal space to unwind and take in the surrounds.

Two bedrooms take up the first floor and overlook the central living room from a balcony that wraps around the three interior walls. The balcony is fitted with American-style shutters to control the inflow of sunlight and maintain an air of privacy. Both en suite and with wooden floors, the bedrooms are homely and personal.

The master bedroom is spacious and boasts an outdoor balcony that overlooks the front entrance to the home, and beyond. The bathroom is a particular treasure – large and with a view that extends over the valley. A cosy shower or bath with a vista is a luxurious way to end a long day exploring the farm, as these owners do. The family pets are treated to long walks through the property daily as the owners look over their present and future projects, including an orchard, a sustainable fruit and vegetable plantation, and a prosperous vineyard.

The home owners have cultivated wine as a hobby, and have a fully operational production and storage cellar. Guests are invited to tastings, picnics and walks, and weekend stay-overs allow for a full appreciation of the home and the greater region.

A guest room detached from the main house has the feeling of a loft apartment. Wooden floors and ceilings, and country-style decor combine effortlessly into a mini holiday destination that it is easily kept cosy for the winter months or dressed down for the summer heat, making it an ideal spot for a weekend visitor.

“It’s almost like looking up from the bottom of a snow globe,” muses the home owner as she looks up and around from a spot in the garden. 360-degree views from any point on the property allow one to feel a million miles away, and call for a new appreciation of the small things that make a house a home.
